It was another sweep of teams for the MSU-Northern basketball squads on Saturday afternoon. The Skylights beat up on the Lakeland College Rustlers, (73-38), while the Lights came back and won against the Rustlers, (72-64).
For the Skylights (5-7), they played their most complete game of the 2023-24 season so far while having four more scorers in double-figures, but this time splitting two starters and two rotation players. Junior transfer guard Karina Cabrera had her best game in a Northern uniform, putting in a career-high 15 points, while starting forwards Ryley Kehr and Savannah Toms chipped in 14 apiece. Junior forward Shyan Krass played a strong second half and finished with 12 points.
For the Lights (9-5), they came out struggling in the first half, finding themselves down by double-digits, (44-32) after 20 minutes of play. In the second half, they turned on the defensive intensity and were able to find their rhythm on the offensive end, beating the Rustlers in the scoring column, (40-20). Senior guard Zack Martinez had 21 second-half points and finished with 23 on the day. Redshirt freshman guard RJ Ramone continued his nice stretch in the starting lineup, scoring a career-high 16 points, while redshirt freshman guard Rogan Barnwell chipped in 12 and junior forward Xavier Bailey had 10.
The Lights and Skylights are finished with non-conference play and now go into their Frontier Conference season. They will make the long trip to Dillon to face the Montana Western Bulldogs on Jan. 6 and will be back home on Jan. 11 to take on Montana Tech.
