The MSU-Northern Skylights basketball team is embarking on a Frontier Conference campaign. Last season was one to forget in conference play for Northern, who only earned one win during that stretch. Skylights coach Chris Mouat told New Media Broadcasters the main aspects of his team that need to be adjusted before play begins.
“I don’t like how we’re shooting the ball from the three (point line),” Mouat said. “We need to see some shots start falling.”
“I guess the other thing that was really a bother to me (from past games) was our turnovers,” Mouat continued. “You’ve got to clean those up. We’re heading into the Frontier Conference and it’s no joke. If we’re going to be loose with the ball, we’re going to be in for long nights, so we have to clean those things up immediately.”
MSU-N’s first opponent for the 2024 Frontier Conference season will be Montana Western, who come in with a (7-5) record and share three common opponents at the Skylights have played so far this season. All three teams lost to both Northern and Western.
Coach Mouat analyzed the Bulldogs and said one set of players will be the factor in his team coming out with a win.
“It’s a long trip to Dillon,” Mouat said. “They’re really good (and) on the verge of being nationally ranked again.”
“It’s really a team of guards,” Mouat continued. “They spread you out, they drive you, and if they’re shooting well from the three (point line), they’re hard to beat.”
“It’s not going to be a lot of surprises,” Mouat said. “(However), they are a little bit different (with) a new coach (Britt Cooper), (who is) running a few different things, but (they’re) very talented across the board (with) guards that can just knife you if you make mistakes.”
The Skylights (6-7) play the Bulldogs on Saturday with a 2pm tipoff time from Dillon. Listen to the game on KPQX-92.5FM.
