It wasn’t the best of weeks for the Havre boys’ basketball team. They dropped their only game last Friday night against Sidney, (65-55) and are now (7-2) on the season. They were down two starters in junior point guard Tre Gary and sophomore wing Kash Keller, but coach WaLynn Burgess told New Media Broadcasters there were other aspects of the contest that stood out in terms of how his team got beat.
“Being down those two guys, it makes you readjust and recenter,” Burgess said. “You can’t always rely on knocking down shots. You have to rely on the defensive end and honestly, after watching the film a couple more times, it’s something we didn’t do a very good job of.”
“There’s a lot of learning points we’re going to take from (the Sidney game),” Burgess continued. “We don’t like losing. It bothers every single one of us, but I think there’s going to be some good that comes out of it as well.”
Regardless of the result, coach Burgess used the moment as a teaching experience for his ball club. He said this time will be beneficial should his team be shorthanded again and that they will adjust on the fly.
“It’s just one of those things that we have to keep focusing on every day,” Burgess said. “We’re going to keep getting better regardless of who is here.”
“At some point in time, it might be somebody else who has to step up,” Burgess continued. “The one nice thing about our team is that I feel like we have depth. We’ve got to keep learning and it’ll be interesting moving on from it, I’m sure.”
