The Havre High School sports season has reached its halfway point. New Media Broadcasters talked with activities director Mark Irvin to ask him his thoughts on why the tennis teams, the track and field teams, and the softball team have been able to get off to great starts to their campaigns. He first pointed at the weather as a great sign in the disparity between last year and this year, even when the weather hasn’t always been perfect in 2024.
“All the squads have had a great start,” Irvin said. “Ironically, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that when our seasons first kicked off back in March, the weather cooperated with us and we were able to be out on the softball field and up on the track (and on the tennis courts).”
“We’ve had a couple days here and there where we were inside,” Irvin continued. “Going back to last year and all the little weather issues that we dealt with all the indoor practices, I think we developed the right way to practice inside and came up with some strategy.”
While Irvin gave credit to the coaches for implementing ways to stay active under current conditions, he also praised the facilities and the experience that the high school offers as reasons for the excelling student-athletes to succeed this season.
“A lot of it is our teams have some experience and the fact that we were able to hit the ground running with some nice weather and all our facilities outdoors, I think that has made a tremendous difference,” Irvin said.
“(I’m) really proud of the coaches and the teams,” Irvin continued. “They’re really doing well this year and I expect good things in the postseason (, too).
