(US Dept of Transportation) The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) has finalized a new safety standard aimed to make automatic emergency braking (AEB) standard in all passenger cars and light trucks by September 2029.
The aim of the standard is to significantly reduce rear end crashes and vehicle/pedestrian incidents.
NHTSA projects 360 lives will be saved each year, along with prevention of 24,000 injuries. AEB systems operate with sensors that detect when a vehicle is close to crashing into an object in front and automatically applies braking if the driver does not do so. Pedestrian AEB technology detects in both daylight and darkness, helping to greatly diminish injury or property damage incurred in such instances.
