The Havre Northstars have gotten back into game mode as the team sets its sights on new competition this week. New Media Broadcasters talked with head coach Patch Wirtzberger and he gave an update on how the team has been coming along since the last games played on May 19.
“It’s gone really well. I think the guys have gotten the rest that they’ve needed,” Wirtzberger said. “We’ve been able to work on a few things without practicing every day. I think it’ll infuse some energy into our stretch run here in June.”
Before the stretch run can commence, the Northstars have an important event that will be taking place on Thursday. The organization is going to be honoring its 1999 American Legion ‘A’ title winners, which carries important weight throughout this community. Wirtzberger said he has been envisioning this coming together ever since he took over six seasons ago and now that it’s finally here, he cannot wait any longer.
“I think it’s going to be great to have those guys back in town,” Wirtzberger said. “Back in the stadium and hopefully get a whole lot of people to honor them.”
“It’s obviously a very big accomplishment that’s hard to do,” Wirtzberger continued. “Hence, we haven’t done it in 25 years.”
“That speaks to how good that group was,” Wirtzberger said. “Being able to honor them is something that I’ve been wanting to do ever since I took over here. It’s finally coming to fruition. It should be a great night.”
After the celebrations are complete, the Northstars will finally be able to hit the field. They will be in town all weekend long at American Legion Park, participating in the Havre Jamboree along with several other clubs from around the north and east along with one southern squad. Wirtzberger gave a breakdown of the regional teams and what he hopes everyone will get out of a fun weekend of baseball in town.
“We’ve got (a few) teams from the east, three teams from the north, and Gallatin Valley coming up,” Wirtzberger said. “A lot of really good teams.”
“It should be good baseball all weekend long,” Wirtzberger continued. “Our format here for the jamboree is just try to get as many games in as we can. There’s no real winner.”
