(Yellowstone) A Washington man was sentenced to one week in jail and two years of unsupervised release for trespassing onto Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park.
Court documents show a park employee photographed the defendant, Viktor Pyshniuk, who had crossed a fence to take a photograph of the geyser from the thermal area. Pyshniuk reportedly told the employee he left the boardwalk for a photo.
When Pyshniuk was sentenced, Magistrate Judge Stephanie A. Hambrick told the defendant his sentence is to deter him from trespassing again, but also the general public, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
