MSU-Northern football has been preparing each of the last two weeks to get ready for their next contest. New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Jerome Souers and he said that this is the stretch of the season that will determine what kind of football team the Lights want to be moving forward.
“That’s really the difference (is) all these little things, so the two byes that we’ve had sandwiched the schedule has given us an opportunity to address those little things (and) to heal up,” Souers said. “We are younger and tend to be more injury prone when you’re not as mature physically.”
“We have a nice seven-game run now after this,” Souers continued. “Hopefully, we’re hitting stride by the time we get back on the field again.”
The next time on the field will be on Saturday afternoon when the Northern Lights will be in Helena to face Carroll College. Souers specifically pointed out their senior quarterback who makes the offense go and said his squad will need to play smart defense against a dynamic talent.
“Carroll is a fine team, very well coached and they’re deep,” Souers said. “They’ve got talented guys on offense and on defense. They’re as good as it gets in this conference. It’ll be a tough road game for us.”
“Jack Prka, their quarterback, is really an accurate thrower. He’s smart. He’s got great pocket presence,” Souers continued. “If he doesn’t like what he sees, he scrambles and creates. That’s a nightmare kind of a thing (for defenses).”
“We’ve got to be really smart in how we pass rush, how we play run defense, and be a better (and) more consistent defense,” Souers said.
