(Kelly Korsbeck) – The Havre basketball teams opened up their season on the road to Miles City on Saturday.
The ladies led things off, with Coach Tom Brown seeing his efforts on the competitive floor for the first time. The Blue Ponies did not disappoint, with a slight 19-17 at the end of one, and pushing out to a 33-26 lead at the break. Havre kept their tempo, on top 40-34 after three, then turning things up to cruise to 52-38 win over the Cowgirls.
Blue Pony scoring was led by Ariana Gary with 19, and Amaya Jarvis adding 10.
In the boy’s follow up, a back and forth developed, with the Blue Ponies ahead 20-16 after the first quarter. The Cowboys then surged to hold Havre to four second quarter points, and head into halftime leading 35-24. The Ponies were undeterred and scrambled back to a 46-42 advantage at the end of three. Havre kept the momentum through the end of the game, defeating the Cowboys 63-51.
Trey Gary led the way with 24 points, and Matt Huse hit double figures with 15.
Next up on the Havre schedule is a trip to face the Lockwood Lions on Thursday, December 12. The girl’s game tips off at 6pm, with the boys set for a 7:30p follow up.
