Havre basketball opened up the East-West Showdown at Lockwood High School outside of Billings, taking on Hamilton on Friday afternoon. The results were the girls’ dominating the Lady Broncs, (72-32), while the boys’ won a close one, (58-53).
For the Lady Ponies (4-1), it was a wire-to-wire victory, leading by nine points after one and then exploding for 19 points in the second quarter. Playing consistently good defense, Havre ended up finishing the game on a (37-18) run in the second half. Tierra Parker had an 11-point second quarter to finish tied at the top with 16 points overall, alongside Ariana Gary. Ela Harbor put on a defensive clinic and also had 12 points in the game. Amaya Jarvis had 11 points in the win.
The Pony boys’ (4-1) played a close game against the Broncs, trailing by five points after one. It was 26-24 at halftime. The Ponies took their first lead of the game at (31-29) early in the third quarter and it would continue to be a seesaw affair, trailing by one after three. Tied at 51 with 1:24 left to go in regulation, Matt Huse knocked down a 3-pointer to give Havre the lead late. At (55-53) Havre, Tre Gary stole the ball with 18 seconds left and recorded a made shot plus the foul to ice the contest. He finished with 24 points, while Huse chipped in with 14 points.
