The Frontier Conference announced its 2025 football schedule in the middle of December. In its first edition of the expanded 14-team field, MSU-Northern will be in the eastern division, alongside Montana Tech, Rocky Mountain College, old and new member Dickinson State, as well as brand new members Dakota State University, Mayville State University, and Valley City State University.
The western division for 2025 is made up of defending conference champion Montana Western, Carroll College, Arizona Christian, College of Idaho, Southern Oregon, and Eastern Oregon along with new member Simpson University (California).
The Frontier Conference will be a two-bid league, meaning the top-two teams from each division will go to the NAIA Football Championship Series playoffs. There will still be opportunities like in year’s past where teams will have the opportunity to earn at-large qualifications, too.
As a result of geography, the Frontier Conference plans to change divisions every few years with Montana Tech, Montana Western, and Carroll College as names floated around going back and forth.
With the updated list of teams filling out the schedule, there will be even more Lights games in the future with 12: six at home and six on the road. The first game of the season is on Aug. 30, 2025, hosting Carroll College at Tilleman Field. The Lights will then go on the road to Dillon to face the Montana Western Bulldogs on Sept. 6.
March 26th will be the first day of spring football practice at MSU-Northern.
