(MSUN) MSU Northern professor and researcher Chad Spangler recently was approved for over 100,000 dollars in research funding in the realm of exercise and disease sciences.
NMB spoke to Spangler about how this study came to be.
“I have kind of a unique background in that I’ve studied human performance and kinesiology, but also infectious disease epidemiology. So, it’s really kind of a combination of those two things: looking at human health from a kinesiology and nutrition standpoint, but then also that infectious disease component which I also think is relevant.”
Spangler hopes to conduct this study over the course of at least two years. Students can participate by registering for one of two classes, both of which will teach students about the research process while also including them as research subjects.
While the money does change hands a couple of times before finding it’s home on the MSU-N campus, the funding ultimately comes from the National Institute of Health, which has recently been affected by the same federal funding freeze that has affected many of the federal agencies providing grant-based funding across the country.
Spangler says that he doesn’t believe that the freeze should affect them and is proceeding as if they’ll receive the full amount, but that if the funding does get affected, they’ll likely have to cut back the research scope.
Already, the freeze on NIH’s spending has interrupted an estimated 16,000 applicants vying for the 1.5-billion-dollar pot that is typically up for grabs.
