(Butte)The Bureau of Land Management field office in Butte is prepared to undergo a project to address forest health across 6,500 acres in the Big Hole West Planning Area, located in Silver Bow and Deer Lodge County.
According to officials, highly flammable conifer trees like pines and firs are experiencing high levels of mortality, as much as 75% in some spots, due to insect infestation and disease.
BLM looks to address these wildfire risks with treatments such as timber harvesting and removal of encroaching firs and pines, as well as prescribed burns.
