GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Biologists with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are conducting black bear research this summer in the Little Belt Mountains.
The project, now in its third year, aims to estimate bear numbers and better understand how factors like hunting and habitat impact populations.
Crews are setting up hair corrals—barbed wire enclosures that collect hair for genetic analysis.
GPS collars will also be placed on up to 10 bears.
Signs will mark research areas, and the public is asked to stay clear.
The work wraps up in August and continues in other regions next year.
