(Helena) – The State of Montana was recently awarded the fourth most amount of Federal Grant Dollars to implement the states Rural Health Transformation Plan. One imitative of the RHTP is Workforce Development. The Montana Department of Labor and Industry has broken that imitative down into three sub initiatives. Sarah Swanson, Commissioner of Montana DLI tells us about the first sub initative.
“One of those initiatives is to expand the rural healthcare workforce through direct training and recruitment. That might mean talent attraction and direct professional recruitment for some of our skilled providers like physicians and advanced practice providers.”
A Rural Health Transformation Plan is a five‑year, state‑designed strategy that outlines how a state will use federal funding to fundamentally improve healthcare access, quality, sustainability, and outcomes in rural communities.
These plans are submitted by states to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), which provides $50 billion nationwide from FY 2026–2030.
