(Helena) – The Helena Ranger District of the Lewis and Clark National Forest is preparing for a series of prescribed burns starting this month to help reduce the risk of severe wildfires.
Fire crews will kick off operations with the Bear Gulch burn southwest of Helena on September 16th and 17th, covering 550 acres. The following week, crews move south of the city for the 330-acre Wakina Sky burn. Finally, the 500-acre Brooklyn Divide burn is scheduled to begin the week of September 28th.
Officials say these projects are designed to alter fire behavior and improve future firefighting efforts. Nearby residents should expect visible smoke and can check air quality online through Air Now. For questions, call the Helena Ranger District at 406-449-5201.
