Fish Wildlife and Parks is conducting an interesting project in Northern Montana. Marc Kloker the Region Six FWP Communication and Education Program Manager explains the project.
“Swift fox basically were extirpated from Montana back in the early to mid 1900s basically through trapping efforts, poisoning efforts to get rid of wolves and coyotes and things like that, and so they basically were not existing in Montana anymore, but in the 80s and into the 90s Canada started re-releasing swift fox from populations that were still stable, and we had suspected that they were starting to move down into Montana. So since then, about every five years we have redone this same census to see ebbs and flows of that population. So, this year in 2022/2023, over this winter we’ve got some seasonal crew members out there running around with headlights and spotlights in the evenings across northeast Montana live trapping and also setting up camera traps for these little critters.” -Marc Kloker
