HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen has announced that the final round of grant awards that will allow local law enforcement agencies to obtain and train new canine units to crack down on the trafficking of illegal drugs in Montana.
Overall, the program is providing 23 agencies with a total of $300,000 in grant funding which was appropriated through the legislature.
In the latest round of allocations, the Fort Peck Tribal Police Department is receiving $13,000, and the Valley County Sheriff’s Office is receiving $10,460.
In addition, the Hill County Sheriff’s Office is receiving an additional $760 in funding to support costs of the K9 and training that was not covered in their original $10,000 award.
This program was created by the Montana Legislature because due to the legalization of marijuana, drug detecting canines that are already trained to detect the smell of marijuana have to be replaced.
