(Montana) Mexico has filed suit in American court rooms to hold American gun manufacturers liable for gun violence crimes committed in Mexico using American made guns.
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, joined by a coalition of 27 other states, is urging the US Supreme Court to correct a First Circuit court’s decision to side with the country of Mexico in this matter.
Ordinarily, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2005 would exempt firearms manufacturers from being held liable to crimes using their products, but Mexico is arguing that their case falls into an exception because they allege that American gun manufacturers know their guns will be trafficked into Mexico.
Knudsen and the coalition argue that this regulation falls under the jurisdiction of Congress, not the Judiciary branch, and that regulation of the firearms industry should be left to lawmakers.
