Spokane, WA – Big Sky Conference media days have concluded and conference commissioner, Tom Wistrcill announced the move to a nine game conference schedule in 2026.
Other College football conferences, such as the BIG-Ten conference, have made the change to a nine game schedule. This change however, comes after the NCAA made the change last month to allow all FCS schools to play a 12 game regular season.
In his address at media days, commissioner Wistrcill stated why the change makes the most sense. “We have, as you all know, trouble getting teams to come out and play us at home, so we made a decision, hey, if we’re going to play this 12th game, let’s add a conference game,” Wistrcill explained. “We can still have three nonconference games, nine conference games.”
Wistrcill did admit that the plan is not yet set in stone, but that the conference is aiming to start the new schedule in 2026. 2026 is also when the conference will see the official departure of Sacramento State and the addition of Southern Utah University and Utah Tech University.
