(Box Elder) Box Elder Public Schools was recently awarded a seven figure grant. New Media Broadcasters spoke with Superintendent Jeremy MacDondald about how much money they received, and what they plan to use it for.
“The grant money came from the department of education. The entire grant is approximately 1.5 million dollars, broken out to approximately 300 thousand dollars [per year] over five years,” he said. “Our plan is develop an immersion program within our school system to improve our efforts to preserve and revitalize the culture and language for our community and our students”
MacDondald says the immersion program will be focused on the culture and language of the Chippewa -Cree tribe, whom he says makes up most of the school and communities population
“Approximately 98% of our students are American Indian, and out of that 98% approximately 90% of them are part of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe, so it’ll serve our local population.
