Box Elder has kids who have played both basketball and football in last sports season. In total, the Bears have gone (33-0) in those respective sports to date. The football team has been the latest to show their athletic prowess in what they can do, running the table on an undefeated (7-0) 6-man regular season. New Media Broadcasters spoke with Bears head football coach Thomas Dilworth and he said that his players have had a chip on their shoulder for playing this sport and that they’re out to say that this is their time.
“I was fortunate to step in and be part of a program that’s got kids that are really committed,” Dilworth said. “They’ve paid their dues, certainly. They’ve had their years of getting beat up on the field.”
“I think they just decided that they wanted to prove that they could compete on the football field as well as on the basketball court,” Dilworth continued. “They’ve just been really committed this season, getting in the gym and doing all the extra stuff (and) the little things that make the difference.”
The Bears will continue to use a high tempo style as the 6-man playoffs begin and the north’s No. 1 seed gets ready to go on a journey to an MHSA state title. Box Elder will host Absarokee and coach Dilworth gave an update on how his team has been preparing not only to face the Huskies, but the entire 6-man field.
“We’ve been preaching about a season of defense,” Dilworth said. “Defense will win the state championship.”
“We’ve got a pretty potent offense that is tough to stop, but if we can’t stop other teams, then that’s going to be the difference,” Dilworth continued. “I think we’ve got a great defense. I think that’s the difference in our team this year over last year.”
“We’ve just had some guys come on really strong,” Dilworth said. “We’ve got great leadership on the defensive side of the ball and that’s going to make the difference in this title run.”
Box Elder (7-0) will play in state playoff football with first round action set for Saturday at 1pm versus Absarokee (7-2).
