BILLINGS, Mont. (NMB) – A Box Elder man was arraigned in U.S. District Court last Thursday on the felony charges of second-degree murder and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Reuben Charles Blackwolf, 44, pleaded not guilty on both charges before U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Cavan. Blackwolf appeared virtually from the Yellowstone County Detention Facility.
Court documents state that on August 10th, 2020, on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Blackwolf “unlawfully killed (an unnamed female) with malice aforethought,” and “willfully and recklessly assaulted (a second unnamed female) resulting in serious bodily injury.
A jury trial has been tentatively set to begin on January 11th, 2021.
If convicted of the most serious crime, Blackwolf faces a maximum life in prison, a $250,000 fine and five years of supervised release.
Blackwolf was detained pending further proceedings.
The FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case.
