The Broadview Lavina Pirates defeated Froid/Medicine Lake (35-34) in the 6 Man Football Semi-Finals of the State Tournament. After both teams were shutout in the first half, the offenses exploded for all 69 points scored in the 3rd & 4th quarters. The Pirates were able to defeat the back-to-back State Champions by 1 point.
Head Coach Brian Heiken credits the 2nd half offensive explosion to his team getting back to doing what they do best on offense.
“And this week they played really tough. Our kids had a monster second half. We just came back and started playing our type of football, and we got the win.” – Heiken
For most, if not all of the team, the State Championship will be the biggest game of their young careers. Coach Heiken wants his team who have been together a lot of years, to focus on their type of football but also enjoy the moment.
“This team has been playing together a long time. We try to play our type of football. Like I told them this is a pretty big week and you gotta have fun while you’re doing it. You don’t get to experience this very often.” – Heiken
