Chinook Football Coach Breaks Down New Core

The Chinook Sugarbeeters football program picked up win No. 1 this past Thursday night, a (56-28) victory over Harlem. The Beeters had contributions in all three phases of the game, scoring six offensive touchdowns, one special teams touchdown, and forcing two turnovers.

New Media Broadcasters spoke with coach Mike Jones and he said because of the young core that the team has established, they are able to put multiple players in multiple positions and are able to stay fresh to wear out their opponents.

“We’re young, but that means we have a lot of guys playing different positions,” Jones said. “We’re not as tired on all aspects of the game, so (the players) have a fresh chance every time to succeed on the field.”

“Our conditioning has been really good because we don’t have kids going for all three phases, so we’re able to stay a little more fresh than some other teams,” Jones continued.”

Those two defensive turnovers were an emphasis for Coach Jones during practice last week and he was excited to see how his youthful defense matched up not only in the turnover battle, but in coverage as well.

“I was impressed with our coverage because we got a lot of (interceptions) in the air and that’s not typical of us,” Jones said. “That just means our young DBs are coming along.”

“(It’s s)omething that our program has struggled with, so to see our coverages be really good, not perfect, but really good, and win that turnover battle is something exciting to see,” Jones continued.

The Beeters next play against Fort Benton on Friday night, which is homecoming. Catch the game at 7pm on KRYK 101.3 FM with Noah Friedman on the call from Hoon Field.
