Chinook’s football team is on a three-game winning streak with the most recent victory coming at Rocky Boy (60-0) last week. New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Mike Jones about how the cohesion between players and coaches has been coming along during this most recent successful stretch and he said it’s been a total team effort from the best player on varsity to the fill-in on the scout team.
“I think we’re trying to get a bunch of guys involved in all three phases of the game the last few weeks,” Jones said. “(We’re) really trying to make sure that not only our upperclassmen, but our underclassmen are on the same page.”
“As we talk especially to those younger kids, it really gives us a look in practice each week and that is pretty vital in having some success on the field,” Jones continued. “Making sure that those scout team players are really doing their job and helping our varsity kids get a look and see what we’re going to have to see on the field each week.”
Jones and his Sugarbeeters will be put to the ultimate test as they’ll welcome in Seeley-Swan to Hoon Field for the next matchup. The Blackhawks, who will be bussing it over four hours to play Chinook, won their first five games of the season in the 8-man west conference before falling to Valley Christian last week. Jones said that his guys are pumped to be playing a non-conference power and that getting a look at a team that doesn’t normally play them is a good key to figuring out who they are as a squad down the line.
“They’re super excited,” Jones said. “We talk to our kids all the time about scheduling teams and trying to get good teams to come (to Chinook) or go to good teams.”
“For us to be able to see that non-conference game and really get a feel for what some of these other conferences are like is awesome,” Jones continued. “We know traditionally the north is a real tough conference, but being able to step out of that and see how tough those other conferences are and play some really good teams helps us in the long run.”
