It was more of the same for Chinook girls’ basketball over the weekend, outscoring both Eureka and Belt for wins. New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Mike Seymour, who gave his thoughts on the team’s play, especially defensively.
“I thought we did a good job of defending the ball and keeping our girls’ in front of us,” Seymour said. “We emphasize taking away the middle and trying not to allow middle drives.”
“We’ve been working hard this week, trying to sure up being able to crush corners and get some traps in the half court in our rotations,” Seymour continued. “That’s something that I’m looking for in these upcoming games this weekend.”
Chinook will play in front of the home fans for the first time this season when the Lady Beeters host Fort Benton. Seymour described the style that his team will face because the Longhorns mirror similarly to them.
“Fort Benton is quick (and) young. They’re well coached. They’re going to get up and down the floor,” Seymour said.
He also shared how Shelby, the opponent for Saturday, is a completely different style on the court that actually benefits Chinook’s defense.
“Shelby likes to shoot the 3,” Seymour said. “I would say they shoot more 3-pointers than any team that we’ll ever see.”
“In fact, they might be 2-to-1 on 3-pointers,” Seymour continued. “It’s going to be important that we defend the basketball there and cover their shooters on the perimeter.”
The Lady Beeters will be the back end of doubleheaders on both Thursday for the home opener against Fort Benton and on Saturday on the road in Shelby. KRYK-101.3FM and HiLineToday.com will have both games with Kyle Leeds on the air around 6pm tonight.
