HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney, Democratic Party candidate for Governor, spent part of his Friday on the campaign trail in Havre at a fundraiser at Triple Dog Brewing.
Cooney spoke to New Media Broadcasters about the values of his campaign that he says align with the Hi-Line, such as providing access to public lands and affordable healthcare and supporting public education.
“Affordable prescription drugs, that’s important throughout the state of Montana, especially in the more rural areas as well. Protecting Medicaid expansion, making sure that Montanan’s have access to health coverage. Making sure that we support our public education structure. If we’re going to make sure the economy grows and businesses can continue to prosper in this state. Especially even coming out of the pandemic, we need to make sure we have a workforce ready to take those jobs that businesses need.”
Cooney also responded to attacks levied by his opponent, Republican Congressman Greg Gianforte, who stumped in Havre last month. Gianforte said that some of the Directives and other actions taken by the Bullock administration over the last few months have created an, “economic pandemic” in Montana.
“We’ve been focusing number one on science, and we’ve been focusing on medical advice. And we’ve been making sure we’ve been focusing to make sure Montanans are as safe and healthy as we can possibly keep them. Also making sure that our economy remains healthy. And we’ve been working with main street businesses throughout the state, assisting folks where they need it. We’re going to continue to do that.”
Neither Cooney or Gianforte have any further campaign events scheduled along the Hi-Line at this time.
