Does Christmas Tree Cutting hurt Montana Forests?

(Helena) – With the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest offering their Christmas/holiday tree permits for the season New Media Broadcasters sat down with Chiara Cipriano the public affairs officer for the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest to ask if cutting down Christmas Trees hurt Montana forests.

“Not at all, it’s actually very helpful. There’s a lot of areas where we kind of have conifer encroachment in meadows and then areas where the trees coming up are way too dense and so it’s actually very helpful to thin those areas. There are restrictions as to where you can cut trees for example, we don’t permit the cutting of trees to close to routes and trails and developed sites but that’s kind of where checking in with our front-line staff can be helpful to kind of have a destination in mind when you set out.”
