HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Halloween is just a few days away and the Havre Police Department and Hill County Sheriff’s Office want to ensure residents of the Hi-Line celebrate the holiday while staying safe.
For those trick-or-treating, Havre Police Sergeant Ryan Pearson says to always walk in groups, cross streets at intersections and only go up to houses where lights are on. When it comes to costumes, Pearson advises that they should be visible at night.
“Try to give something reflective on your kids costume. If you need to, give them glow sticks so they are easier to see, if they need to walk with a flashlight. And then just remember to not cut through houses or yards. And definitely don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know. Don’t go into a house of someone you don’t know.”
In addition, always check your kids candy before letting them eat it. For those handing out candy, make sure to remove sharp objects from your walkway.
Pearson also asks those driving on Thursday evening to be extra vigilant.
“So drive a little bit more slowly, check at intersections for kids. Make sure everybody is keeping an eye out for who may be crossing. If there is a group of people, let the whole group cross before continuing.”
The Hill County Sheriff’s Office recommends parents or guardians check the Montana Sexual or Violent Offender Registry before trick-or-treating to know what residences to avoid.
