The Fort Belknap Reservation is participating in a unique program with only five other tribes in the country. The program is called Tiwahe, and it was started only seven years ago.
Amy Murdock who works in the program explains more.
“So Tiwahe was introduced in Fort Belknap in 2016. We are one of six pilot programs throughout the United States. We are here to provide wrap around services for different programs that are already in fort Belknap. I best describe it as an umbrella program.”
She continues to explain the goals of the program.
“We have about six different goals including, supporting families through coordinated service delivery, increase the rate of family reunification, integrate culture into services, support self-determination and self-governance, reduce the rate of substance abuse, and child and family abuse and neglect, and the last one is to serve as a model program for leading Indian country while preserving the future of the people. So basically, we try to incorporate culture into our program as much as possible while promoting self-sufficiency.” -Amy Murdock
Now the Tiwahe program has a new building.
“Well, we just got moved into our new building. We were kind of scattered throughout different programs, but we did just get into our new building. That was a three-year project to get our new building. So now we’re all in a central delivery location, and we will be having an open house within the next few months so that the community can come in and learn what Tiwahe is about.” –Amy Murdock
