HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Friends of the Havre Animal Shelter’s annual free spay and neuter clinic is set to take place on August 1st and 2nd at the District 4 Human Resources Development Council building.
Friends of the Havre Animal Shelter President Kim Federspiel says the COVID-19 pandemic has forced them to make a few changes to this years clinic.
“Everything for cats will be done with people in their cars. They drive up in a line and we will check them in. A volunteer will take them into the clinic, we will fix the cat. They will have about 20 or 30 minutes to wake up. If they do not wake up in that time, we will give them a shot to reverse the anesthesia. And then once the kitten or cat is all the way awake, we will take them back to their owner. With dogs, only one person will be allowed in the building. We will have everyone spaced out six feet apart for recovery. We’ll do our best to keep everybody separated, everyone will have to wear masks. We’ll just be as safe as we possibly can.”
Also this year, vaccines will be available at low or free cost. This is not limited to pets that are being spayed or neutered.
“That’s just going to be a drive-in situation as well. You’ll pull in, fill out some paperwork. Whoever is doing the shots will come over and administer the shots, and you’ll be ready to go”
Vaccines that will be available include the rabies vaccine and an animal booster, which includes protection from distemper and parvovirus.
The cost for one vaccine is $10, and $15 for both vaccines. The Friends of the Animal Shelter has some funds available for those unable to pay.
The clinic has room for 60 dogs and 100 cats to be spayed or neutered. Those interested in having their pet participate can call Federspiel at 390-0745. If she does not answer, leave a message with your name and phone number. Please only call between 8 AM and 9 PM.
It is not first come first serve, rather, priority is based on owner’s income and whether they live in Havre.
Funding for the clinic is provided by a grant from the Sands Foundation.
