GLASGOW, Mont. (NMB) – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is looking to gather data on the greater short-horned lizard, also called a “horny toad”. A press release says this lizard is a Species of Greatest Inventory Need in the state due to insufficient data to determine their status.
It was once considered the second most abundant reptile along the Missouri River in Montana in the late 19th century, second only to the western rattlesnake, but there isn’t enough data to accurately estimate current populations or distributions.
FWP is seeking the help of people out trekking around the countryside to provide incidental observations in addition to their structure survey efforts. Wildlife biologist in Region 6 Heather Harris says, “If you happened to observe one in anywhere in the state, please record the location, get GPS coordinates if possible, and note the date, number observed, and take a photography of it if you can.”
Observations can be emailed to Harris at heharris@mt.gov.
