HELENA, Mont. — Governor Greg Gianforte has vetoed Senate Bill 188, which aimed to create a legal framework for community solar projects in Montana.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Chris Pope of Bozeman, passed the Legislature with strong bipartisan support.
It proposed allowing participants to buy shares in local solar arrays, lowering power bills while feeding energy into utility grids.
Supporters said it would boost access to renewable energy and grid resilience.
Opponents included NorthWestern Energy, Montana-Dakota Utilities, and the Consumer Energy Alliance.
The governor did not issue an immediate public statement explaining the veto.
