(Helena) – Montana Governor Greg Gianforte received the initial report from the Licensing Reform Task Force in Helena on Tuesday, which outlines 37 recommendations for Montana’s occupational licensing system.
The task force was created by executive order in January 2026 to review licensing regulations. It formed four subcommittees focused on barriers to entry and mobility, construction, health care, and periodic review, with a particular focus on rural and frontier communities.
According to state officials, the recommendations were developed following 32 meetings and more than 200 public comments, which included stakeholder testimony, survey findings, and operational records. The report’s 37 proposals include suggestions for legislative development, administrative action, rulemaking, coordination, and further study.
Task Force Chair and Labor and Industry Commissioner Sarah Swanson stated that the recommendations aim to reduce administrative delays and paperwork while maintaining competency and safety standards. The proposals will now move forward for further administrative and legislative consideration.
