(Havre) The Hi-Line Arts Counsel hosted Hal Stearns on Monday to give a talk on the small towns in Montana as part of the Montana Towns: Then, Now, Tomorrow series.
Stearns gave some insight during the lecture on what causes some Montana towns to stick around while others seem to fade away.
“One thing: community pride. You belong to the Kiwanis Club, you go to the high school basketball game. You go to your local churches, you’re involved in a town clean-up. That’s the way a town stays around, and if they care about their town, they’ll make all the difference in the world. That’s why some of them will dry up and blow away, because everybody thinks they live in their own little world and ‘I don’t need to worry about anybody else'”
The Arts Council’s next event is the Phil Aaberg Christmas Concert at Havre High School.
