The Havre basketball teams split a pair of contests with Custer County in Friday night Eastern ‘A’ basketball action from the Blue Pony Corral. The Lady Ponies ended up losing, (45-43) in a revenge game for the Cowgirls, while the Pony Boys cruised to a (78-49) victory.
It was a hotly contested start to the girls’ game with the Cowgirls looking to return the favor after they lost to Havre at home, (55-49) back on Jan. 6. For the Blue Pony girls’ (8-2), they found themselves down at halftime to the Cowgirls, (37-14), but battled back to record an (18-2) third quarter. Havre trimmed the deficit to two with 35 seconds left, but turned the ball over. They were able to get it back after playing good defense and forcing a turnover and with four seconds left, threw the inbounds pass out of bounds and didn’t guard the entry pass as time ticked off the clock for the Cowgirls’ first win against the Lady Ponies since 2008. Ramsey Pryor and Camdyn Waterman were unstoppable in the 2nd quarter, combining for 21 points. They finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore forward Ariana Gary was the only Lady Pony in double-figures with 13 to lead all scorers.
For the Blue Pony Boys’ (8-2), they connected on 12 3-pointers in their game, including five from senior guard Shane Patascil. He led everyone with 24 points. Havre went on runs of (22-11) and (14-5) in the final two quarters to secure the blowout. Havre also had double-figure scoring nights by junior point guard Tre Gary (12), senior guard Jackson Headdress (12), and senior guard Carter Spangler (11).
The Ponies have a split set of games on Saturday as they take on Billings Central Catholic. The boys will play at home at the Blue Pony Corral at 4pm against the Rams, while the girls will take on the Rams in Billings at 4pm. Catch the girls’ game live on KOJM-610AM and HiLineToday.com.
