The Havre high boys’ basketball team is riding a high to start the season, winning both games over the weekend. A wire-to-wire opening win at East Helena was followed up by a come-from-behind victory at home over Lockwood on Saturday.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach WaLynn Burgess and he recapped how his message to the players at halftime ignited a 19-2 4th quarter.
“Like we talked about in the locker room, there’s only two ways that you can go about it; you can either let it keep happening and go home with a loss and come back on Monday to figure that out or tell them you want to come out and play to try and give ourselves a chance,” Burgess said. “(The players) came out and just really focused that whole second half.”
“They had to get defensive stop after defensive stop,” Burgess continued. “Credit to all those kids who came in and played. There was no drop off in energy. Those guys were getting after it.”
The Blue Pony boys will now have a quick turnaround from the thrill because they are heading to Malta to take on the Mustangs in a non-conference rivalry game on Tuesday night. Coach Burgess shares what he has been saying to his team ahead of the game.
“(Malta has) a really good team,” Burgess said. “They return pretty much everybody from a team that played in a (Class B) state championship last year.”
“It’s going to be a really challenging game for us,” Burgess continued. “We like the challenge of going over there. We know that it’s always going to be a loud place and we know we have to give our best effort and they’re going to come out and play really hard.”
“We’re just excited to have another chance to get out on the court,” Burgess said. “We get these seven games before we get to Christmas break and it’s a sprint. We understand that.”
Havre and Malta will tip off around 5pm on Tuesday night. Listen to the game on KOJM-610AM, the home of Blue Pony Sports.
