HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Havre City Council met on Monday evening at City Hall for their regularly scheduled meeting.
By a 6-1 vote on first reading, a raise to the Mayor’s office that was proposed by Terry Lilletvedt was approved. This would be the first raise for the Mayor since 2006, and would boost their annual salary from $22,000 to $30,000, starting on January 1st, 2021. Ed Matter cast the only vote against the raise.
This ordinance change will go through a second reading at the next council meeting.
Also approved was an annual resolution that allows Havre to collect fees for cutting nuisance weeds on taxes. This is only for properties that do not take care of their weeds. The city gives ten days notice to property owners with weeds that exceed regulations, then cuts the weeds for them if they don’t respond. If they do not pay the bill they are sent, the charge is assessed to their taxes. This was unanimously passed.
The Council also unanimously approved the confirmation of Jayce Barclay as a Patrol Officer with the Havre Police Department.
Barclay was appointed as a probationary officer a year ago and had qualified to be confirmed as a Patrol Officer.
The only other regular agenda item was September claims and manual warrants, which were approved unanimously.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, council member Andrew Brekke notified the council that they have been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Association of Realtors, which they will be using to provide educational mailers to Havre residents on the benefits of the charter resolution that is on the upcoming General Election ballot. There was no objection, so the mailers will be sent in the coming days.
Derek Eldridge was the only council member not present, but was excused.
The next Havre City Council meeting is scheduled for November 2nd. An Ordinance Committee meeting will follow, where they are expected to discuss potential solutions to the overpopulation of deer in Havre.
