HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – On Tuesday evening, Havre’s City Council met for their regular meeting in City Hall.
The first agenda item was a resolution canceling elections for any unopposed races. Races with more than one candidate will be voted on November 5th. Any ballot write-ins that happen before the September 3rd deadline that challenges a previously unopposed candidate will go to the elections.
The Council also passed three ordinance changes on first reading. The first two had to do with temporary signs within city limits. They decided to strike out any mention of content in the ordinance and they will treat political signs like any other temporary signs. All temporary signs, including political ones, can be displayed for 60 days. The sign poster must note the date the sign was posted on the sign itself.
They also cleaned up language related to filling a vacant city council seat in between elections. They struck out a part that required them to notify the Democrat and Republican Central Committees of a vacancy since City Council positions are now non-partisan. They also now require an administrative philosophy and resume when applying for a position in this way.
The Council also approved the appointment of Nate Courtnage as the Assistant Fire Chief and allowed a variance to allow dogs in Pepin Park for a fundraiser for the Havre Animal Shelter on August 10th.
