HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Havre’s City Council will be hosting a meeting on Wednesday, October 30th to talk about Special Improvement Districts as a way to fund street and infrastructure repairs in Havre. They have invited Dan Clark, an expert from the Montana State University Extension Office to explain to the public an the Council how Special Improvement Districts work and how to get started. City Council member Lindsay Ratliff says that now that two proposed mill levies to fix the streets and infrastructure has failed, this is their last option.
“Every street needs fixed in Havre, but down below, the infrastructure, the pipes and all the plumbing is what desperately needs fixed. However, the City doesn’t have the means to fix every single infrastructure issue in town. So, this is a way of community members getting together and paying for it through, basically a self-imposed tax.”
Council member Sarah McKinney encourages everyone to attend the meeting.
“Renters could also be impacted because the person that owns the home that they rent from will have to absorb that cost or spread it amongst renters. So, it does really effect all of us and if you do plan to live in Havre long-term, it does make sense to be involved in the SID process.”
The meeting will start at 6 PM in Havre’s City Hall.
