The Havre girls’ basketball team is coming off a commanding victory over Sidney last week. Coach Dustin Kraske spoke with New Media Broadcasters and said what the defining moment of that victory was for his squad.
“I thought in the second quarter essentially defensively (and) offensively, we were really good,” Kraske said. “We need to build from there and that is the goal.”
The team now has scheduled contests with Custer County and Billings Central Catholic back-to-back days. First, Kraske broke down the Cowgirls, who almost pulled off a comeback the last time they faced Havre at their place to hand them their only loss of the season so far.
“I think it’s between them and us who will win the league,” Kraske said. “It’s going to be a great game, obviously. They’re well coached (and) they do a nice job.”
“Not that I think that our kids thought that we had the game won, but we had a little bit of a lead with three (minutes) to go and then the coaching needed to get better,” Kraske continued. “We turned the ball over too much (and) we had a little bit unsureness about us.”
The Blue Pony girls’ will then travel to Billings to face Billings Central Catholic for the first time this season. Kraske shared the battles in year’s past and what this time around will look like for both squads.
“They’re fundamentally sound (and) they rebound incredibly hard,” Kraske said. “Their kids are good (and) they play well together (and) they play hard.”
“Their defense they do is a unique ‘sagging/switching’ man. We’ve found the last five or six years that that’s been very hard to score against.” Kraske continued. “They do pressure the basketball quite a bit in the full court it appears, so that will be another aspect to handle.”
Tipoff of Miles City-Havre will be at 6pm on Friday night, followed by Saturday’s road game with Billings Central Catholic at 4pm. Both games can be heard on KOJM-610AM and HiLineToday.com.
