The Havre golf teams wrap up the regular season going on the road to Billings and Laurel. The girls come off of a spectacular weekend finishing in the top-2 in both meets they played in. The boys finished second and sixth at those same tournaments, respectively.
Head coach Dennis Murphy said this upcoming trip will be a good test to see where his teams stack up against the other Eastern ‘A’ teams in the region.
“The thing about going to Billings and Laurel is that these are the Eastern ‘A’ schools, so it really gives us a barometer of where we sit within the Eastern ‘A’,” Murphy said.
Coach Murphy gives the New Media Broadcasters listeners a scouting report of what his players will be expecting when they play on the course in Billings and then adjust to the exclusive Laurel Course.
“Going into Billings, we play Yegen (Golf Course) and their course is a public course, (which) is a little (wider) open,” Murphy said. “It’s challenging, but not as challenging as what we will be facing on Friday at Laurel. Laurel is probably one of the premier courses in Montana.”
“It’s a private course. If you want to get on it, you have to be a member and so we’re very fortunate to get to play there,” Murphy continued. “It’s a difficult course to play, so this is going to challenge us mentally.
The Blue Ponies will be at the Billings Central Catholic Invite on Thursday, followed by a quick turnaround to the Laurel Invite on Friday.
“You’re going from more of an open course to a tight course, so being able to adjust to that and not get frustrated if we’re playing well is a big key,” Murphy said.
