Havre High School has won a state championship in Montana at multiple class levels in all but two sports in the over 100-year history of the institution. It is displayed proudly via an 8-by-16-foot wooden sign at the west end of town as you drive along Highway 2, both in conjunction with and then outliving a sign that was displayed on the eastbound end of Highway 2. The HHS State Championship sign origins were inquired about by New Media Broadcasters and the first lead pointed to the Havre Chamber of Commerce.
Through the research of the Chamber, NorthWestern Energy provided a community grant for the initial sign because it was not on school property. The Chamber also said to reach out to former activities director Dennis Murphy, who discussed what the process had been like when he was at the helm of making sure the sign, which has its current design as of 2012, got updated every season the Blue Ponies won a state championship.
“The sign itself is updated by our booster club,” Murphy said. “They get that information from the activities office.”
“Each year, the activities office should send the championships to the booster club and then the booster club, at that point in time, sends it to the individuals who provides the material to update it,” Murphy continued. “In the past, it has been Holden’s Hot Wheels (who) had done the updating on the sign, but there are several people involved in it.”
Once the most recent lead came to be, New Media Broadcasters reached out to the Havre High Booster Club. Through comment, the organization made the decision to involve new local businesses to add the most recent three-peat girls’ basketball championships (2020-21 to 2022-23) to the original board as well as the boys’ tennis title from 2021.
The sign was updated over the weekend and is available to view with the new numbers added to the already illustrious championships won by Blue Pony teams of the past.
