Havre Softball Results – MHSA State Class ‘A’ Tournament

The Havre softball team was eliminated from the 2024 MHSA State Class ‘A’ Tournament on Friday, losing two games. The squad fell to the Hamilton Lady Broncs, (5-2) and were mercy-ruled by the Frenchtown Lady Broncs, (10-0) in five innings.

Havre collected only seven hits in game one, including the game’s opening run by right fielder Rachel Jette after she knocked in center fielder Jersi Morse on a single. Hamilton scored four times off Elle Verploegen in the fifth inning and tacked on one more insurance run in the sixth. Verploegen had another dominant performance in the hard-luck loss, recording 13 strikeouts to push her season total to 201 on the season. Havre came back with a seventh inning rally that resulted in six players coming to the plate and pushing across the second run, but the effort fell short.

The Blue Ponies then matched up with a familiar opponent, the Frenchtown Lady Broncs, in the first loser-out game. Havre had beaten Frenchtown earlier this season at the latter’s invite, (4-1). Unfortunately for the Ponies, they couldn’t recapture that magic. The Lady Broncs crossed the plate three times in the first inning and then put up four runs in the third, followed by two runs in the fourth before walking it off in the fifth. Jette was a lone bright spot, throwing in the circle for the first time since Apr. 26 and only letting up one run in two innings. She also recorded the Ponies’ only hit of the game.

The Lady Ponies softball team finished the 2024 season with an (18-9) mark, including going the entire month of May without a loss before the memorable Laurel divisional game last week. The careers of Verploegen, Morse, and Shelby Huston came to an end, but the Ponies will be returning the rest of the core and will also find diamonds in the rough who will be joining the roster next season.
