HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Hill County Commission convened on Thursday morning for their final business meeting of 2021 and unanimously voted to allow fireworks over the New Year’s Holiday.
The same rules apply as in Havre City limits, with fireworks only allowed to be discharged between 10 PM on Friday and 12:30 AM on Saturday.
The Commission said they put this item on the agenda because some people expressed concerns about fireworks causing fires. However, after consulting with local fire departments, they determined that the danger is low due to the cold weather and snow on the ground.
“This probably came about because of the big fire out of Great Falls that was caused by fireworks, even though it was cold, it was extremely dry.,” said Chair Diane McLean. “And the snowfall is kind of the mind changer for most of the people involved here.”
Also on Thursday, the Commission approved a budget amendment to allow the Health Department to receive an additional $254,235.84 in Public Health Emergency Preparedness Grant funding. The majority of these funds will go wards paying the salaries for the positions of Disease Intervention Specialist and Congregate Living Coordinator.
The Commission also announced that Kayla Smith will take an oath on Monday morning as she will be sworn into the position of Hill County Deputy Sheriff/Coroner.
