Havre, MT – Now in its ninth year, Frontier Conference basketball coaches are gearing up for the annual Hoops for a Cause fundraiser in Helena.
Hoops for a Cause has become a highlight of the year for Frontier conference coaches. The event is a 3v3 basketball tournament, that as of Thursday afternoon had 47 teams registered, giving all the proceeds to help someone in need.
Head coach of Skylights basketball at Montana State University-Northern, Chris Mouat, explains what the event is about. “Hoops for a cause is basically an event we run every year as the Frontier conference, to basically raise money for somebody in need.” Mouat said.
This year the event is set to help out Carroll College men’s basketball player Cam Niles. “He got to school for his first year last year and he got very very sick, and they found out he had a form of blood born cancer.” said coach Mouat.
Niles under went six treatments of chemotherapy and lost 70 pounds. Cam rung the bell in early march to signify his victory over the cancer. Niles plans on making his return to the for Carroll College this season and will be in Helena on Sunday for the event.
Over its nine years, Hoops for a Cause has raised over $155,000. The annual three-on-three tournament will take place at the Carroll College PE Center on Sunday, August 3. The funds from this years Hoops for a Cause will go to help pay the steep price it takes to fight cancer.
