HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Havre Public Schools’ Superintendent Andy Carlson discussed with New Media Broadcasters what Havre schools will have to think about in light of Governor Bullock’s phased reopening plan.
Carlson said there still is a lot of restrictions despite the state allowing schools to reopen again and now is the time for schools to take a step back and seriously evaluate the situation before they consider reopening.
“There’s a lot of restrictions. So, it’s not just open up the school like it was March 13 and I think that’s one of the first things that people have to realize. You know, he talks in fact of a mix of potential in-person and remote learning in there. It’s focused on at-risk students, students falling behind. I think those are some of the things that we have to take a look at.”
Carlson said one of the questions he gets asked a lot is whether or not a graduation ceremony will happen, and Carlson remarked that plans are subject to change even if they decide to hold a ceremony.
“One of the big pieces for all of us is graduation and that’s the one I get asked about a lot. Honestly, I’ll tell people it’s not just the regular graduation. I mean it speaks to the very thing that your graduation environment must meet the social distancing requirement. I think what we all have to keep in mind is it’s a dynamic situation. So, what we might plan for could change tomorrow.”
Carlson concluded that everyone must try to keep the bigger picture in mind, because reopening schools could cause other problems for the city of Havre.
“We’ve got to be a part of getting Havre back open too. I mean we’re just a piece of it. I have a real interest in seeing our businesses get going again, I think everybody does. What we don’t want to do is have us open up and then be the spot that causes the great disruption.”
