HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – With tax season officially underway, the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI) is reminding Montanans to file accurate tax returns and choose a tax preparer wisely.
The IRS says that in 2018, 55 percent of taxpayers used a paid preparer. Although most are honest and professional, there are a small number of dishonest preparers who are out to steal money and personal information. To avoid falling victim to these preparers, take the following steps:
- Ask the preparer if they have an IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), which is required for paid preparers
- Inquire about credentials and check their qualifications
- Avoid preparers who base fees on a percentage of their client’s refund
- Never sign a blank or incomplete return and review it before signing. Refunds should go directly to the taxpayer.
