(Lewistown – KRTV) A public forum in Lewistown was held to address the issue of grizzly bear predation, especially on livestock, in Fergus County.
This is in light of the proposed 4-D rule from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which would change regulations in ways the FWS says will give management agencies and landowners greater flexibility and tools to take bears in the context of research and conflict management.
Current rules forbid actions against grizzlies in many cases, including the protection of livestock in cases of attacks.
In 2024 alone, over $196,000 in claims were filed due to livestock killed by predators.
